Kenai Fjords Boat Trip

Today we took a Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise out of Seward. We were on the Star of the Northwest with Major Tours. We saw several glaciers including Bear Glacier which is the largest one in the Kenai Fjords National Park.

We saw a variety of wildlife including several Bald Eagles, Puffins, Sea Lions, Porpoises, and Mountain Goats. The highlight of the wildlife viewing was 2 whales that seemed to be putting on a show for the boat.
The puffins are really interesting in color and fun to watch take off and then dive under for fish.
It is hard to get a good picture of an eagle, they are either too far off or they take to flight just as you get your shot ready. This is one of the whales that put on a great show for us, just kept on diving and rolling for about 20 minutes.

It is hard for us not to compare this to the Stan Stevens boat trip that we took in Valdez. The Valdez trip was perhaps an hour longer. Wildlife viewing was comparable between the two. On the Valdez trip we were no closer to the glacier than on this trip but the field of icebergs we were in there created an effect of being there that we did not get from the landlocked glaciers on this trip. The buffet meal on this trip including Salmon and Prime Rib was excellent, and far outshined the soup and sandwiches on the other tour.
